Luís has a Mechanical Engineering degree with MSC in Automation and Robotics from Instituto Superior Técnico de Lisboa – Portugal in 2005.
His very first professional experience was collaborating on the early steps of the once startup Albatroz Engineering. There he contributed in the development of hardware and software solutions for airborne power lines inspections systems with the use of LiDAR, digital imaging, GPS and inertial systems, mostly on the development and test of processing algorithms for real time sensor fusion and automatic data segmentation.
He later changed tack to lead the maintenance team of a large shopping center newly built, gaining a broad knowledge on modern building support systems. He was responsible for the operation, troubleshooting and maintenance programs execution of the for a variety of large scale supervised systems ranging from electrical distribution to water and cooling supply, HVAC, emergency and fire protection to mention a few.
His last pursuit for knowledge in Portugal was at TE – Connectivity automotive relays factory, where participated in the design, assembly and commissioning of the own factory production line automated module along with the development of imaging quality check systems and real time target control systems.
In 2012 he moved to Norway to work for the Oil&Gas industry at HMH (at the time known as Aker Solutions drilling equipment division and later as MHWirth) where he participated in the Innovation and Technology department developing, testing and commissioning control system upgrades for individual drilling equipment control systems and later on the creation of their supervising layers for autonomous synchronized operation.
In 2019-2020 he gave an opportunity to the fusion energy, with a participation on the ITER project, taking duties on the Control Systems Integration division, developing, validating and testing distributed control systems for the supporting systems of the fusion reactor.
In 2020 he returned to HMH to continue the development of the state of the art automation for deep water offshore drilling rigs, taking on hands pilot projects deliveries in cooperation with Equinor and Transocean, from A to Z, designing, developing, testing, commissioning and follow up of the today proven framework DEAL and their smart modules Drillers Assist and DA-Drilling and the current generation of 3D Simulators, accumulating more than 6 months on the field offshore in commissioning and drilling activities follow up.

The age of Artificial Intelligence
The age of artificial intelligence (AI) is marked by recent groundbreaking developments that are already revolutionizing various sectors. From deep learning algorithms capable of outperforming humans in specific tasks to the rise of sophisticated neural networks, AI has shown immense potential. The advancements in natural language processing, computer vision, and predictive analytics demonstrate AI’s transformative power. These developments not only enhance the efficiency of existing systems but also pave the way for innovations previously considered science fiction.
Increasing demand for automation and software amidst ageing population
In recent years, there has been a remarkable surge in the demand for automation and software, a trend driven by several key factors. The rapid pace of technological advancement has made automation not just feasible but essential across various industries, from manufacturing to services. As businesses strive for greater efficiency, accuracy, and cost-effectiveness, automating repetitive and labour-intensive tasks has become a priority. This shift is also fuelled by the increasing availability of sophisticated software solutions that can streamline complex processes, enhance decision-making, optimize and increase safety on operations. Companies are investing heavily in digital tools and platforms to remain competitive and responsive to changing market dynamics. This growing dependence on technology reflects a fundamental change in how businesses operate, signalling a new era where software and automation are central to organizational success and innovation.
Many countries are experiencing significant demographic shifts with a growing proportion of the population being elderly. This results in a shrinking workforce as more people retire, leading to a scarcity of human resources available for various sectors, including technology and software development, but moreover on the already depleted landscape of industrial automation development know-how.
With fewer people available to work, there’s an increasing reliance on automation and software solutions to maintain productivity and efficiency, creating a vicious cycle that will not be possible to break using the conventional programming methods, heavily reliant on manual work and knowledge.
With this scenario already playing out, industry must embrace AI and machine learning to automate processes that were traditionally done by human labour if they want to keep up with up development pace and productivity goals. Specifically in software development, productivity gain factors of 10x are well at reach with usage of AI. The know how to take advantage of AI in software development and maintenance will be paramount in the near future.
